Chapter 8
I handed in the exam to the guy behind the counter.
He fed it through a machine that, I assumed, read all of the little bubbles and scored the test, because the next thing I knew he was congratulating me.
âA perfect score,â he said in surprise. âWell done. The next thing is to schedule your driving test.â
âOh. Iâve taken a driving test. Aced it, too.â I flashed a giant smile and a wink. âCan I go ahead and get that CDL? My company has a big delivery for me to make, not to mention I styled my hair for the picture. It would be a shame to waste all of these curls.â
The young guy nodded, trance-like. âIt sure would. I mean,â he cleared his throat, âstep up to the blue wall.â
I did.
âDonât smile.â
I closed my lips.
Flash. I blinked the camera lights from my eyes.
âOkay, Miss Cumberland. Here is your permit.â The guy reached for the printer, added a black and white copy of my face and license. âIâm sure you know that for the permit, you must drive with a licensed CDL holder for a minimum of fourteen days. The permit is good for up to 180 days or until your standard Texas license expires.â
âThank you,â I gulped. Not that I would tell him, but the rule about driving with a babysitter was definitely news to me. How had I missed that? Oh, well.
Next stop, Longhorn Trucking to get on the move.
Before I left the DMV, I texted Trudy and Shelia a GIF of a big truck and the news that I was officially licensed.
Trudy sent me a bunch of party faces and a thumbs up. From Shelia, absolutely nothing. Iâd been trying to deny it, but it seemed pretty clear that with my convertible gone, my money drying up, and my new life about to begin as a working woman, my friend was ghosting me.
* * *
âTa-da,â I said in a bright, sing-song voice as I sashayed, yes I may have sashayed, into the office of Longhorn Trucking holding my brand-new permit out in front of me like a trophy. âGuess who got a perfect score on the test?â
âWell, missy, thatâs mighty fine!â Jace stood up and came around the desk to hug me.
I glanced behind him to Skipâs desk and got a whole smile and nod. No hugs from that corner, apparently. Shame.
âThanks,â I said to them both. âHow is your mom?â I asked Jace.
âSheâs doing alright,â he dipped his head. âMad as a wet hen but that got a little better when I came in today and called to tell her everything had been cleaned up.â
âGood!â I smiled.
Walking over to Skipâs desk, I laid the paper permit in front of him so he could enter the data into the company records. âHere it is. An official CDL.â
âCan I have those keys now?â I called to Jace over my shoulder.
Skip picked up the sheet of paper. âHold on a minute. You still have to have someone qualified ride with you for fourteen days.
